About La Union

DESIGNING THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT FOR COMMUNITY SOVEREIGNTY

La Union brings deep expertise in community-centered architecture, adaptive reuse, and sustainable building design to the Sacred Land Collective's flagship development projects. Their work is grounded in the belief that the built environment should reflect the values, culture, and aspirations of the communities it serves.

As the lead architecture and interior design firm for both SLC projects, La Union is responsible for translating the vision of the Friends of the Family A/V Studio and the CE Hub S.T.R.E.A.M. Center into fully permitted, construction-ready architectural documents. From the first schematic sketch to the final permit approval, La Union guides every dimension of the design and regulatory process.

La Union works in close coordination with all SLC construction partners — House of Powers Construction, Henry's Landing, Biofiber Industries, and SPWES LLC — to ensure that the architectural drawings reflect the full technical scope of the solar microgrid, hempcrete construction system, and S.T.R.E.A.M. zone programming that define these projects.

Projects

TWO PROJECTS. ONE VISION.

Friends of the Family

A/V Studio & Solar Microgrid

Auburn, WA — 70 Acres

La Union is leading the full architectural and interior design scope for the Tiny Barn House — a three-room structure housing the Energy Storage Room, the A/V Recording Studio, and the Music Room. Their work includes the structural drawings, foundation plans, interior acoustic design, and all permitting required to break ground.

CE Hub S.T.R.E.A.M. Center

Circular Economy Innovation Hub

Community Land — Shipping Container Campus

La Union is designing the full conversion of two 40-foot shipping containers into a six-zone S.T.R.E.A.M. learning center. Their scope includes the container modification drawings, wooden awning extension design, interior zone layouts for all six innovation spaces, and the complete permitting package for the CE Hub site.

Scope of Work

FULL DESIGN & PERMITTING SCOPE

Architectural Blueprint Development

  • Develop full architectural drawings for the Friends of the Family Tiny Barn House (Energy Storage Room, A/V Studio, Music Room)
  • Develop full architectural drawings for the CE Hub S.T.R.E.A.M. Center (dual 40-ft shipping container configuration with wooden awning extensions)
  • Produce Level 1 Floor Plans, Front Elevation, and Side Elevation drawings for both structures
  • Design foundation plans including 6" concrete beam perimeter and 4" interior slab layout per structural requirements
  • Coordinate structural details with Henry's Landing (civil/groundwork) and House of Powers Construction (general contractor)
  • Produce construction document sets (CD sets) for contractor bidding and permitting submission
  • Revise drawings in response to permitting authority feedback and field conditions

Permitting & Regulatory Compliance

  • Lead all permitting applications for both the Friends of the Family project (Auburn, WA) and the CE Hub project
  • Prepare and submit building permit applications to the City of Auburn / King County permitting authority
  • Coordinate land use, zoning, and conditional use permit applications with the appropriate jurisdictional agencies
  • Manage environmental review requirements including stormwater, grading, and site disturbance permits
  • Coordinate electrical permit applications with Henry's Landing (master electrician) for solar and energy systems
  • Coordinate mechanical and plumbing permits for kitchen, greenhouse water systems, and rainwater capture infrastructure
  • Track permit status, respond to agency requests for additional information (RFIs), and manage approval timelines
  • Ensure all structures comply with applicable building codes, energy codes, and accessibility standards

Interior Design & Space Planning

  • Design interior layout and material specifications for the A/V Studio room — acoustic wall treatments, equipment mounting, cable management, and control room layout
  • Design interior layout for the Music Room — instrument storage, soundproofing, performance space, and recording interface positioning
  • Design the Energy Storage Room interior — battery rack placement, ventilation, safety clearances, and monitoring panel integration
  • Design interior fit-out for all six CE Hub S.T.R.E.A.M. zones: Greenhouse, Makerspace, Library, Workshop, Theater, and Kitchen
  • Specify hemp insulation installation details in coordination with Biofiber Industries for all interior wall and ceiling cavities
  • Specify hempcrete block wall finishes and interior surface treatments for both structures
  • Develop furniture, fixture, and equipment (FF&E) schedules for each zone and room
  • Produce interior elevation drawings, reflected ceiling plans, and finish schedules for contractor use

Site Planning & Coordination

  • Develop site plan showing placement of both structures on the 70-acre Auburn, WA parcel
  • Coordinate road and access path alignment with Henry's Landing (Division 1 groundwork and road development)
  • Integrate solar panel array placement and battery storage location into the site plan in coordination with SPWES LLC and House of Powers
  • Coordinate placement of Micro Eco Studio, EcoVillage structures, and Main House on the site plan
  • Ensure site plan reflects stormwater management, rainwater capture system routing, and utility easements
  • Produce landscape and grading plans in coordination with Biofiber Industries for hemp cultivation zones

Sustainable Design Commitment

DESIGNING FOR HEMPCRETE, HEMP INSULATION & REGENERATIVE MATERIALS

La Union's interior and structural drawings are specifically designed to integrate Biofiber Industries' hempcrete block system and hemp insulation batts throughout both structures. Every wall cavity, ceiling plane, and foundation detail in the construction documents accounts for the unique properties of hemp-lime construction — including thermal mass, vapor permeability, and acoustic performance.

This commitment to regenerative materials is not an afterthought — it is embedded in the architectural logic of both projects from the earliest schematic design phase, ensuring that the buildings perform as well as they look and last as long as the community they serve.
